Steelers players can begin voluntary offseason workouts at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on April 17 with the first of 10 organized team activity sessions — or OTAs — scheduled for May 23.
The NFL announced Friday the start of voluntary workouts for all 32 teams.
April 17 is the first day of phase one of the voluntary program for Steelers players. It consists of two weeks that are limited to meetings, strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation.
The second phase is a three-week process in which players can get on the practice field. These sessions, however, are limited to individual or group instruction. Offensive and defensive players can line up against each other but the drills can be conducted only at a “walk-through,” pace, according to the league. No live contact is permitted.
The third phase, which begins for the Steelers on May 23, features three weeks of OTAs and a three-day mandatory minicamp.
OTA sessions are scheduled for May 23, 24, 25, 30 and 31 and June 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The three-day minicamp will run from June 13-15.
Again, no contact is permitted but teams are allowed to have 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 practices.
