Jerry Richey is a 1967 North Allegheny grad.

Jerry Richey, a cross country and track and field standout at North Allegheny in the late 1960s, will be inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2022.

During a Pitt career from 1967-71, Richey earned All-America stature five times, winning two NCAA championships, achieving a sub-four-minute mile, anchoring a world record-setting relay team and reaching the finals of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Trials.

He captured NCAA titles in the 3,000 meters (1970) and as a member of the Panthers’ distance medley relay team (1971). In a February 1971 meet at Delaware, Richey ran a 3:59.7 mile as the anchor leg, spurring his distance medley relay squad to a world-record time of 9:39.7.

When he ran his initial sub-four-minute mile at age 19, he became one of only 27 Americans at that time to accomplish the feat.

The 2022 class will be honored Sept. 30, at Acrisure Stadium.

Chi honored by Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation awarded the 2022 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship to North Allegheny High School graduate Connor Chi. The scholarship, valued at $5,000, is co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club.

The Johnson scholarship, created in 1992, is presented annually to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence, community service and for providing leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of their school’s hockey program.

Chi played center and was a team captain during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. Last winter, he led the Tigers with 38 points (16 goals, 22 assists). During his junior year, he helped lead the Tigers to a Penguins Cup championship.

He also was a member of NA’s volleyball team that won its fourth state title in five years in 2022. He will attend Michigan this fall to pursue a degree in sports management.

Curran to play at Ohio

The North Allegheny girls volleyball team has another promising roster this fall as it chases a sixth straight PIAA Class 4A title.

One of those Tigers secured her college plans before the season began.

Senior libero Caroline Curran made a verbal commitment to play at Ohio on July 30.

Curran was named to the all-state team after she had 62 assists and 412 digs last fall. She also was second team all-WPIAL and first-team all-section.

Her older sister, Madi, plays at St. Francis (Pa.).

Stager picks Kentucky

North Allegheny junior Abigail Stager made a verbal commitment to play soccer at Kentucky on Aug. 11.

The forward was an all-section selection last fall after scoring 12 times.

Strong start for NA girls golf

North Allegheny’s girls golf team improved to 6-0 overall with a 185-220 win over Blackhawk in the section opener Aug. 18. Katie Rose Rankin shot 41, followed by Megan Manesiotis and Lauren Kardos at 47 and Amber Roth at 50.
