Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky says he still has faith in offensive coordinator Matt Canada

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky’s last pass comes up short as he is pressured by the Cleveland Browns’ Jordan Elliott during last Thursday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium.

A day after his head coach spoke on themes of resolve and blocking out “the noise,” Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky similarly put a happy face on staying the course in leading an offense for a 1-2 team that ranks second-to-last in the NFL in yards.

“On the film, you’ve seen the improvements,” Trubisky said before Wednesday’s practice at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “We just haven’t been making those big plays or scoring as many points as I think we should have. The plays were there on film. We just got to go make them and I think it comes down to execution in more detail throughout practice. Sometimes it’s just reps, and sometimes it’s just an indication that we’re just going to have a great week.”

With only four offensive touchdowns in three games, the whispers from the outside to make a change at starting quarterback and/or offensive coordinator are growing into a crescendo. As for the former, Trubisky said he believes his offensive teammates have faith in him as their leader.

“I think they have confidence in me,” Trubisky said, “and it’s just communication being on the same page and everybody telling our work. The plays have been out of there recently, let’s go out and make them. I feel like we’re heading in the right direction.”

Trubisky also publicly is supporting his offensive coordinator. A handful of Steelers offensive players have made references to play calling — and not necessarily in a positive light — since the season began. About midway through Trubisky’s 7-minute gaggle with media Wednesday, Trubisky brought up Matt Canada, unsolicited, in a positive manner.

“We’ve got a bunch of great calls. Matt has been calling good games and putting us in good spots,” Trubisky said. “We’ve just got to go make out the plays for him and for this offense.”

Trubisky said he recognizes that criticism — be it of him personally, or a coordinator like Canada or of the offense as a whole — comes with the job when the team is not producing. Similar to how coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday said “we believe in what it is that we do and the people that we’re doing it with,” Trubisky pressed on his faith in Canada and in his offensive teammates to get the job done.

“We went back and looked at the film, we talked through it as an offense and as players and as the coaches, and the plays are film,” Trubisky said. “Before you start pointing fingers, you’ve got to look at yourself, see what you can do better.

“And for me, it’s getting the ball to playmakers more, being on time, being good with my footwork and those types of things. And everybody else can look to do that at that position. The plays are on film, and if we make more plays, then it looks better, and we scored more points. So we just got to focus on doing our job, being detailed in our work, and pulling together as a unit and having each other’s backs.”
