An overtime goal by defenseman Jack Rathbone gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-2 comeback win against the Springfield Thunderbirds at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass., on Friday.

Defenseman Ty Smith recorded two assists for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (10-8-2-0), which overcame a two-goal deficit, while forwards Matt Filipe and Rem Pitlick each contributed goals. Goaltender Magnus Hellberg made 36 goals on 38 assists and boosted his record to 2-3-0.

Making his season debut, Penguins defenseman Will Butcher recorded an assist and had two penalty minutes as well as one shot. The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned Butcher to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday after activating him from the injured non-roster list. Butcher had been sidelined due to an undisclosed ailment he suffered before training camp.

The Penguins’ next game is a home contest against the Thunderbirds on Saturday, 6:05 p.m.


Forward Matt Koopman scored each of the Wheeling Nailers’ goals in a 3-2 home loss to the Toledo Walleye at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.

Goaltender Taylor Gauthier’s record slipped to 4-5-0 after he made 29 saves on 32 shots for Wheeling (8-9-0-0).

The Nailers’ next game is a road contest against the Indy Fuel on Saturday, 7 p.m.
