Former WPIAL and PIAA golf champions Katie Miller and Olivia Zambruno moved on at the rain-hampered 83rd Pennsylvania Women’s Amateur.

Miller, a three-time champion who starred at Hempfield at North Carolina, defeated Julianne Lee, 2-up, holding off a back-nine rally by the unaffiliated Lee Thursday at Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Militia Hill course.

The sixth-seeded Miller plays out of Ligonier Country Club. She next will meet Morgan Frazier of Carlisle Country Club.

In another opening match in the championship flight, Zambruno, a junior at Penn State and a Greensburg Central Catholic graduate, easily topped Megan Adelman, 8 & 6. Zambruno, who plays out of Pleasant Valley Golf Club in Connellsville, was 7-up after nine holes.

The No. 4 seed, she will face No. 5 Julia McLaughlin of Saucon Valley Country Club in the quarterfinals. McLaughlin defeated former Pine-Richland standout and current Penn State player Lauren Freyvogel, 4 & 3.

Rain suspended play Wednesday so a number of players had to finish their stroke-play rounds Thursday morning before the match-play brackets were drawn up.
