The most impactful signing Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford must ponder this offseason might have nothing to do with a forward, defenseman or goalie.

Coach Mike Sullivan is heading into the final year of his contract. Now that he’s handled the bulk of his player-acquisition duties for the summer, Rutherford said he will, at some point, turn his attention to his coach.

“Up until this point, my focus was to change some of the players,” Rutherford said. “There’s obviously some work I have to do going forward, make some decisions. Personally, I feel that Mike’s a terrific coach who’s done a very good job here. He has good communication with the players. I would like to see him stay long term, but when I’ll get to that, I don’t know.”
