QB Mason Rudolph confirmed starter for Steelers; Kenny Pickett questionable to back him up

It’s official. Mason Rudolph is getting a second consecutive start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Coach Mike Tomlin’s decision was confirmed by a team spokesperson after Friday’s practice at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. Rudolph had gotten first-team reps all week, but Tomlin during his weekly news conference Tuesday had left open the possibility that Kenny Pickett could start if he were to have progressed enough from ankle surgery performed earlier this month.
Pickett was listed as a limited participant at practice this week on the injury report. His status for Sunday’s game at the Seattle Seahawks is questionable, meaning he could be in uniform to serve as Rudolph’s backup.
Rudolph made his first start in more than two years during last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, posting the best passer rating for a Steelers quarterback in more than three years (124.0) and throwing two long touchdown passes in a 34-11 victory.
Rudolph had replaced Mitch Trubisky late during a loss at the Indianapolis Colts the week before. Against the Bengals, Trubisky was in uniform as the backup.
Pickett on Wednesday said he felt he was healthy enough to play but was deferring to trainers and coaches.
The Steelers (8-7) likely need to win their final two games to secure a playoff berth.
