Mars native Carter Schade was the first overall pick in the United States Hockey League draft Monday night.

Mars native Carter Schade became the first Western Pennsylvania player picked first overall in the United States Hockey League draft Monday night.

The 5-foot-10, two-way defenseman who committed to Penn State as a 15-year-old last April was selected by the Lincoln Stars. He had 16 goals and 30 points in 70 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U-16 and Midget teams last season.

Schade was one of five Penguins Elite players chosen in the first phase of the draft.

Wexford native Ty Voit also was a first-round pick, going ninth overall to Cedar Rapids.

In the fourth round, goalie Andrew Pichora (Bethel Park) went to Cedar Rapids, and forward Shawn O’Donnell (Crescent Township) was picked by Omaha. In the 10th round, Omaha selected forward Jackson Morehouse (Sewickley).
