Madden Monday: ‘Steelers making the playoffs this year is far from a sure thing’
Well, we’ve made it to triple digits.
We are now beyond 100 days since major American team sports shut down. We’re at 103 now.
So if you think it’s easy to do this job without melding the coronavirus and its surrounding society-wide quagmire into the mix, you are insane.
During this week’s “Madden Monday” podcast, Mark and I explain why divorcing those two worlds is such a difficult thing to do.
We also dive into Mark’s column about all-time Pittsburgh sports victories. Both of us have similar lists. But I explain why the 1979 World Series stands out to me right now. And why the 2009 Penguins Stanley Cup title and the 2005 Steelers Super Bowl win should be remembered even though they are the “middle children” for those respective franchises.
The two of us also pick apart my column regarding Mike Tomlin last week. Sure, Tomlin is open to criticism for the Steelers failing to win a playoff game each of the last three seasons. However, context of team history and how other organizations have fared recently need to be brought into the conversation.
Mark agrees, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s sold on the 2020 edition of the team.
“I just laugh when I see people saying (the Steelers) are going to win 10, 11, 12 games,” Madden says. “I just don’t see that.
“I think the Steelers making the playoffs this year is far from a sure thing.”
The hockey hub city discussion is kind of a mess right now. Mark and I try to figure out what the NHL is thinking in terms of making those decisions and why Las Vegas is now no longer a lock.
America is lagging behind when it comes to restarting its favorite sports. I think it’s all about liability. We’ll get Mark’s opinions.
We also banter about rewatching old TV series out of boredom, “Boogie Nights” vs. “Casino,” and the angst over Major League Baseball’s stalled negotiations.
