Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes runs Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.

For Pittsburgh Steelers fans who were rooting against the San Francisco 49ers winning the Super Bowl, you got your wish. The Steelers are still one of just two teams, along with the New England Patriots, who can boast six Super Bowl trophies.

Thanks to the Niners’ 25-22 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL title game on Sunday night, San Fran is still stuck on five titles.

So, locally, we can be happy about that.

Here’s the bad news, though. The Chiefs are now up to four Vince Lombardis. And quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still only 28 years old. Mahomes getting K.C. one step closer to seven Super Bowls may be an even bigger threat to the Steelers getting surpassed than if the Niners had tied them and the Patriots at six.

As far as Mahomes goes, he won the Super Bowl MVP award — his second in a row and third overall. In this week’s “Madden Monday” podcast, Mark Madden of 105.9 The X says this victory elevates Mahomes to the status of being the best quarterback of all time.

“It’s one of those Super Bowls people will talk about forever. And I don’t know how you don’t say Mahomes is the greatest of all time now, after that drive to win it,” Madden said. “I don’t know how anybody can put him not even with Brady at the top of the pyramid.”

Personally, I’m not ready to do that yet. While Mahomes’ physical skill set may be better, Brady did so much winning for so many years and so deep into his career. Mahomes has an extremely long way to go to match that.

Keep in mind that by the time Brady was 28, he also had three Super Bowl championships and two Super Bowl MVPs on his mantle as well.

But Madden insists Mahomes stands alone.

“I saw both play their whole careers, and Mahomes is a better quarterback. I know Brady has won seven. Mahomes has won three. Mahomes does more. He is a better quarterback,” Madden said. “I think he is easily better than Brady. Then again, I just don’t go by the wins. I think Dan Marino was better than Brady, and he didn’t even get one ring.”

Strangely enough, the play that may have been the most memorable for Mahomes wasn’t one that he made with his arm. It was one he made with his legs, running for a first down on a keeper in overtime on fourth-and-1.

“It was a great call. You put the ball in the hands of your best playmaker,” Madden said.

Mahomes also had a great run on a third-and-1 later in the overtime game-winning drive before the eventual decisive TD pass to Mecole Hardman.

Also, in the podcast, Madden and I talk about the hysterical overreaction in Pittsburgh to T.J. Watt getting snubbed for the Defensive Player of the Year award, some of the Steelers’ QB rumors from Sunday morning, and the Penguins going 0-2 on the weekend road trip.
