There is a chance Little League International will have baseball and softball seasons — just a lot later than usual.

Little League International sent a bulletin to district administrators Friday, instructing leagues to hold off until May 11 before launching a season.

Leagues usually have started by now, but the coronavirus pandemic halted all sports across the country.

The bulletin stated, in bold letters, as certain states and municipalities begin their phased approaches to reopening, it is “highly encouraged that each league and district adheres to the guidelines set forth by their respective state and local government and health officials in terms of public gatherings and sporting events when determining when it is safe to return to normal activities after May 11. Leagues should contact their local health authority for guidance prior to resuming any Little League activities.”

West Point president Tom Rennie said it is a waiting game for everyone involved.

“I feel we’ll have a season, but I don’t know when,” he said. “We’re relying on Little League International on what we can or cannot do. When we get notice to go, we’re ready to go.”

Rennie said he has talked to other league presidents, and everyone is on board. He said there are a lot of scenarios for the type of seasons that will occur.

District 26 senior executive and West Point vice president of rules Don Thomas said Little League International is discouraging leagues from canceling seasons. He said he is sure Little League International wants some sort of season if possible.
