Latrobe native Hanna Green, who ran to a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run last month at the Toyota USA Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, received a financial boost as she prepares for her next elite race.
A little green never hurts.
Green was one of 25 athletes from around the country to be awarded a $25,000 grant from Stephen A. Schwarzman, the chairman, CEO and co-founder of Blackstone.
Schwarzman has donated $2.75 million to support high-end training for the country’s top track and field athletes.
The grant is meant to supplement athletes on the road to next month’s world championships and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
A 2013 Latrobe graduate who had a strong college career at Virginia Tech, Green posted a time of 1 minute, 58.19 seconds at the USATF meet to finish just behind Ajee Wilson of Neptune, N.J.
The top three finishers in each event advanced to the World Athletics Championships Sept. 28 through Oct. 6 in Doha, Qatar.
Green, who has Olympic aspirations, is the first athlete from Western Pennsylvania to qualify for the world championships since Rochester’s Lauryn Williams in 2009.
