Shawn Robinson was exposed to sports through most of his life, most notably as a Pitt defensive back for four years at the turn of the century.
As founder and president of Orange Arrow, a consulting service aimed at helping develop young student-athletes for pursuits later in life, Robinson and his staff will take a new, bigger step over three days this week.
The first Orange Arrow Symposium in Sports (OASIS) will be held through Thursday at David Lawrence Hall on Forbes Avenue on Pitt’s campus. Several local athletes — past and present — and media members will conduct back-and-forth panel discussions with about 150 attendees. The keynote conversation will feature legendary broadcaster Bill Hillgrove and former Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert.
”Sports has the opportunity to bring people together,” Robinson said. “(OASIS) was birthed to be a resource to the sports and educational communities, particularly at the professional level, to share best practices to create more inclusive winning teams. We are very hopeful for it become an annual event.”
Among the 40 speakers and panelists expected to attend Wednesday are former Pitt football players Doug Whaley, Lousaka Polite and Dorin Dickerson and present players Ryan Jacoby and Keye Thompson. Other participants include Dr. Kathy W. Humphrey, President of Carlow University; Pitt women’s volleyball coach Dan Fisher; and Dr. MaCalus V. Hogan, David Silver Professor and Chair at the UPMC Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey also is expected to be in attendance to provide remarks.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Pittsburgh Steelers have joined OASIS as sponsors.
