Jeff Capel said Saturday after his team’s 59-56 loss to Virginia that the three years’ probation and sanctions imposed by the NCAA on Pitt athletics will have no impact on his basketball program.

“None. Absolutely none. No impact at all,” he said.

All of the violations, which involve illegal use of non-coaching personnel, occurred during the tenure of former coach Kevin Stallings. Capel was hired in March 2018.

In addition to a $5,000 fine and ½ of 1% of each of the men’s basketball and football budgets, basketball was hit with minor penalties. They include:

• A reduction in the number of coaches by one at regular practice for 16 hours during the current academic year.

• A reduction in athletically related activities hours this spring from 20 to 18 (in-season) and eight to seven (off-season).

Asked if it’s wise for the NCAA to limit coaches, Capel cut off the question.

“I don’t get into what’s wise or what they do,” he said. “That’s their thing. I coach my team and worry about my program. I can’t answer that.”
