Coming out of Jeannette, Robert Kennedy was considered one of the better football talents — and all around athletes —- in the state.

A quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back for the WPIAL and PIAA Class A champion Jayhawks two years ago, Kennedy opted to attend Lackawanna, a junior college in Scranton, where he could hone his skills, get his academics in order and possibly move on to a Division I program.

The former small-schools “Mr. PA Football” is on the right track: He announced he has picked up local FCS offers from Robert Morris and Duquesne.

Kennedy (5-10, 172) had three interceptions, six pass breakups and 26 tackles as a defensive back last season at Lackawanna, which went 11-0 and won the El Toro Bowl.

Initially, five schools — Howard, Albany, Duquesne, St. Francis (Pa.) and Robert Morris — showed interest in Kennedy later in his prep career. Howard and St. Francis offered, but those deals were fleeting.

A Pennsylvania Sports Writers’ co-Class A Player of the Year, Kennedy passed for 1,462 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushed for 1,356 yards and 22 scores as a senior. He also pulled in 12 interceptions.
