A trio of non-starters who are expected to play not-insignificant roles on offense and defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers were limited participants in what was the first official practice of the 2024 regular season.

Running back Jaylen Warren, receiver Roman Wilson and cornerback Cory Trice Jr. each had previously-known injuries. Warren suffered a hamstring injury during the Aug. 17 preseason game, Wilson suffered an ankle injury during the first padded practice of training camp early last month and Trice endured a groin injury during the Aug. 24 preseason finale.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday expressed some optimism that some or all would be available for the regular season opener Sunday at the Atlanta Falcons.

Tomlin has already announced that starting left guard Isaac Seumalo would not play Sunday because of a pectoral injury. Also not practicing Wednesday was rookie defensive lineman Logan Lee (calf).

Pitts limited

The Falcons’ injury report was brief – but it included a significant player in tight end Kyle Pitts, who was limited at practice because of a hamstring ailment.

Reserve linebacker Nate Landman was the only other player on the Atlanta report. He was limited because of a quadriceps ailment.

Scott out

Five days after he was brought into the organization, veteran running back Boston Scott was placed on the practice squad injured reserve list Wednesday. It in all likelihood ends the season for Scott, who appeared in 75 games over the past six seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles.

To replace Scott on the practice squad, the Steelers signed Aaron Shampklin. Shampklin, a former all-Ivy League honoree while at Harvard, had some moments in which he stood out during training camp.
