Murrysville native Palmer Jackson continued his hot playing, this time in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur on Monday at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

Playing the opening round on course No. 4, Jackson fired a 4-under-par 66 and is tied for second place with Trevor Werbylo, a shot behind leader Brandon Wu, who shot 5-under 65.

Jackson shot 1-under par 34 on the front nine then carded five birdies, including three consecutive, to shoot 32 on the back. He finished with seven birdies and three bogeys.

The 2019 Franklin Regional graduate and Notre Dame commit has posted nine consecutive competitive rounds in the 60s.

He is one of three players competing from Hannastown Golf Club. Greensburg’s Mark Goetz shot a 6-over 76 on No. 4, and Oakmont’s Sean Knapp shot an 8-over 78 after taking a 9 on the second hole on No. 4.

The other Western Pennsylvania golfers competing are McKees Rock’s Trent Karlik (3-over 73 on No. 4) and Peters Township’s Connor Schmidt (6-over 76 on No. 2).

The players will switch courses for the second round, then the field of 312 will be pared to the low 64 for match play, which begins Wednesday.
