Katie James used home-course advantage to raise a golf trophy Monday.
James captured the 12th Western Pennsylvania Women’s Amateur Championship on her home course, Fox Chapel Golf Club, with a steady-as-she-goes round of even-par 73.
Sewickley Heights Golf Club’s Madison McDanel, of Central Valley, was a shot back at 74 and former Hempfield and North Carolina standout Katie Miller, who plays out of Ligonier Country Club, was third with a 76.
James, a sophomore at Southern Methodist and a Shady Side Academy graduate, played the four par 5’s in 2-under with birdies on Nos. 2, 4 and 13, and a bogey on 18.
She made 10 pars.
McDanel had just two birdies and made two bogeys, while headliner Miller turned in even 37, shaking off a double bogey at No. 5, but bogeyed three of her final four holes to fall out of contention.
Miller recently qualified for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship set for Sept. 14-19 at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz. Last month, she won the 95th Women’s Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania Championship with a 6-under score of 210 (72-69-69), the latter two rounds setting course record at Edgewood Country Club.

Also Monday, Kristine Hnat of Butler’s Golf Course won the 3rd WPGA Senior Amateur with an 82, two shots better than Jane Wymer of Butler Country Club (84).
The super-seniors title went to Colleen Adams of Pinecrest Country Club. Adams shot 86 to edge fellow Pinecrest member Vicki Smith by two shots.
Play began after a fog delay Monday morning. This year’s event drew a record 51 players.
