Golf notebook: Strong finish lifts Jimmy Ellis to Pittsburgh Classic title
Amateur Jimmy Ellis of Venetia birdied the final two holes and rallied to win the Pittsburgh Classic at St. Clair Country Club.
Ellis was trailing first-round leader Greensburg amateur Kevin Fajt when he made the final charge.
Ellis shot a 3-under par round 69 and finished 8-under 136.
Fajt, who shot a bogey-free 1-under 71, finished at 7-under 137.
Amateur Brett Young of Bethel Park was third at 5-under, while the top pro was Kevin Shields of Mt. Lebanon at 4-under.
Amateurs Brady Pevarnik of Latrobe and Tanner Grzegorczyk of Glenshaw tied for fifth at 2-under, while six players including pro Rob McClellan tied seventh at even-par 144.
POY Tournament
The Tri-State PGA Isaly’s Player of the Year Championship was held July 28 at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Here is a list of division winners:
Boys 17-18: Wes Warden, 1-over 72.
Boys 15-16: David Fuhrer II, 3-over 74.
Boys 11-14: Ty Hartman, 6-over 77.
Girls 16-18: Paige Scott, 1-over 74.
Girls 11-15: Alyssa Zhang, 4-over 77.
74th Tommy Smith Invitational
The annual Tommy Smith Invitational will begin Thursday at Greensburg Country Club with a qualifying tournament. Teams will play an 18-hole event to decide the flights for all team teams.
Past winners of the tournament include Ronald and David DeNunzio, Arnie and Arnold Cutrell and Nic Milito and Javon Trout.
