Gateway graduate Jordan Edwards finds scoring touch at High Point

Jordan Edwards has made a scoring impact as of late for the High Point women’s basketball team in NCAA Division I.
The 5-foot-7 senior guard and Gateway graduate scored a season-high 14 points last Wednesday in a 65-57 victory over Radford which put the Panthers at 11-11 overall and 8-3 in the Big South Conference.
In 36 minutes, Edwards was 4 of 7 from the field, including 2 for 4 from 3-point range, and was 4 for 6 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down a season-best eight rebounds and dished out six assists.
It was High Point’s fifth straight victory. Edwards averaged 8.2 points in those games.
For the season — 22 games and 17 starts — Edwards is averaging 5.8 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds.
She doled out a season-high nine assists in a victory at North Carolina A&T on Feb. 2.
Last season, her first at High Point after transferring from Niagara, Edwards averaged 7.4 points and 5.1 assists over 28 games with 25 starts.
Shelly Jones
The junior on the Clarion women’s indoor track and field team recorded one of the top shot put throws in the history of the Golden Eagles program at the Youngstown State University Mid-Major Invitational on Jan. 29.
She tied a personal record with a toss of 12.81 meters (42 feet, 2 inches) for sixth place overall. The mark, which came on her third attempt of the day, kept her in sole possession of second place on Clarion’s all-time women’s shot put performance list.
The record is 13.07 meters.
One week earlier, Jones took eighth in the shot at the Youngstown State Collegiate Invitational with a top toss of 12.45 meters (40 feet, 8 inches).
Jones opened her season Dec. 3 at the YSU Ice Breaker and took 12th overall in the shot at 12.04 meters. She was fourth among Division II throwers.
The distance also qualified her for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships as she surpassed the standard of 11.50 meters.
Evan Whiteside
The sophomore on the Thiel College wrestling team was 14-3 at 125 pounds through his team’s 42-6 victory over Waynesburg on Jan. 28.
Of those 14 victories, 10 came by fall with another by technical fall.
Whiteside went 5-1 and placed third at 125 at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational on Dec. 4.
He went 1-1 in the championship bracket and rebounded to pin four straight opponents in the consolation bracket.
Whiteside was the No. 1 seed at 125 for Saturday’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships at Waynesburg.
John Paul Kromka
The junior forward on the Pitt-Johnstown men’s basketball team picked up his fourth PSAC Men’s West Defensive Athlete of the Week honor of the season Feb. 7 after strong performances in a pair of victories the week before.
In a 71-70 victory at Cal (Pa.) on Feb. 2, Kromka scored 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, including five on the defensive end.
He added two assists, one bock and three steals.
Kromka then tallied a game-best 21 points on 9 of 13 shooting with 12 rebounds (nine defensive) in a 72-59 win at Edinboro on Feb. 5. He also led all players with eight blocked shots and added two assists and one steal.
Through 23 games, Kromka, a two-time PSAC West Defensive Player of the year, is averaging 18 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.8 blocks. The Mountain Cats went 18-5 in those games, including a 14-3 mark in PSAC play.
He produced 23 points and eight rebounds in an 84-81 win over Slippery Rock on Feb. 9.
Sarah Corrie
The junior on the Slippery Rock women’s indoor track and field team tossed the shot put 12.82 meters (42 feet, 5 inches) at the Edinboro Invitational on Jan. 15.
The top attempt placed her second overall, and it was both her season and career best.
She currently is ranked fourth overall in the PSAC with the conference championships slated for Feb. 26-27 at Edinboro.
Corrie started her season Dec. 3 at the YSU Ice Breaker and was ninth overall with a PSAC-qualifying mark of 12.32 meters. It was the only meet for Corrie leading into the Edinboro Invite.
She also placed seventh in the shot put (12.48/40-9) at the YSU Mid-Major Invitational on Jan. 29. She was fourth among Division II throwers and fifth out of all non-Division I competitors.
Luke Whisel
The freshman on the Waynesburg indoor track and field team earned a top-10 finish in the 5,000 meters at the Jim Wuske Invitational on Feb. 5 at Mt. Union (Ohio).
Whisel led the Yellow Jackets with a seventh-place finish in a time of 16 minutes, 33.85 seconds.
That finish came on the heels of a trip to the Marietta College Pioneer Invitational on Jan. 22 where he placed sixth overall with a time of 9:48.82.
Whisel and his Waynesburg teammates now are gearing up for the PAC Indoor Championships Feb. 24 in Youngstown.
