Franklin Regional grad Palmer Jackson advances at USGA Amateur

Palmer Jackson had his troubles on Pinehurst No. 2 during the second round of stroke play qualifying at the United States Golf Association’s Amateur on Tuesday.

He shot a 6-over 76 and saw his consecutive rounds in the 60s end at nine.

It was a different story for the 2019 Franklin Regional graduate and Notre Dame commit on Wednesday on No. 2 during match play.

Jackson was 3-under through 16 holes in his match against Hayden Springer of Trophy Club in Texas and rallied for a 3 and 2 victory in the Round of 64.

After going 2-down after seven holes, Jackson won five of the next seven holes, recorded birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 14, to take command of the match. He had five birdies.

Jackson advances to the Round of 32 on Thursday where he’ll fave Jacob Solomon of Auburn, Ala., at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. Solomon defeated Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y., 4 and 3.

Greensburg native and West Virginia junior Mark Goetz didn’t finish his second round and played Wednesday morning. He finished with a 16-over, 156.
