Andrew Stimmel was a defensive assistant at Marquette four years ago but has returned to lead the men’s lacrosse team as head coach.

The Franklin Regionl graduate takes over for former coach Joe Amplo, who resigned to take the head coaching position at Navy. Amplo and Stimmel are the only head coaches in program history.

Stimmel was the offensive coordinator at Yale for the last three seasons and helped the Bulldogs win the 2018 NCAA national championship and a runner-up finish this past season.

He was the defensive coordinator at Marquette in 2016 when the Golden Eagle won a Big East Conference title. He also coached Grove City in 2012-13. He was the 2013 Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division III National Coach of the Year.

Stimmel, an Ohio State alum, is an assistant for the U.S. Under-19 team.

“Andrew is one of the rising stars in the lacrosse world and we are thrilled to know that he will be leading (Marquette),” Marquette Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl said in a news release. “He has been a winner at every stop along the way and we expect that to continue in Milwaukee.”

Stimmel has coached in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last five years, and played in the postseason as a defensive midfielder in 2008.

He was picked by the Ohio Machine in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse supplemental draft and later served as director of curriculum and co-director of recruiting for Low and Away Lacrosse Camps in Pittsburgh.

Stimmel led the U-15 Fellowship of Christian Athletes National Developmental team to a national title in 2011. He was an assistant on national title-winning teams at the U-17 and U-19 levels.

“Marquette’s unparalleled commitment to building an exceptional lacrosse program while producing elite leaders is second to none,” Stimmel said. “I couldn’t be more excited to continue that tradition.”
