Former Penguins defenseman Jack Johnson has signed with the New York Rangers. Per The Athletic, Johnston agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.15 million.
On Monday, the Penguins bought out the final three years of a five-year contract they signed Johnson to in 2018. Johnson, who had a salary cap hit of $3.25 million with the Penguins, largely struggled during his time with the Penguins and was regular a target of critics.
Last season, Johnson appeared in 67 games and scored 11 points (three goals, eight assists).
Johnson, 33, reunites with Rangers assistant coach Jacques Martin who oversaw the Penguins’ defense until his contract was not to renewed in August.
As a result of his buyout, the Penguins will have to carry a cap hit of $1,166,667 to account for Johnson in 2020-21. The buyout will expire following the 2025-26 season.
