Determination and patience led Jassan Eubank to a special day, one he always envisioned but approached with caution for fear it might not happen.

The former Greensburg Central Catholic standout, two years removed from high school football — and two years into a college career he rerouted based on belief that his game was better than some thought — finally committed to a Division I program.

Eubank, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end, announced Sunday he is heading to South Dakota State of the Missouri Valley Conference.

He spent last year at Nassau Community College (N.Y.) after transferring from Edinboro. Eubank received little college interest coming out of GCC.

“They showed a lot of love and out of all the schools recruiting me they had a real family atmosphere,” Eubank said of South Dakota State. “I also want to win another championship; They’re always top 10 in (FCS) and continue to make playoffs. They think I’m the piece they need to take them past the semifinals, where they lost the past two years.”

Last season at Nassau, he caught the attention of higher-level programs when he posted 47 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He helped Nassau to a victory in the Red Grange Bowl.

Eubank’s other scholarship offers were from Southern Mississippi, Austin Peay, Delaware State, St. Francis (Pa.), Northern Alabama, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman and Mississippi Valley State.

Eubank said he wanted to commit around his late father Jason’s birthday, which would have been Saturday. Jason Eubank died in 2011 at age 36.

Another one of his sons and another former GCC student-athlete, Asa Klimchock, announced his college decision Sunday, as well. Klimchock, a Kiski School graduate, will play college basketball at Clarion.
