Former Penguins forward Aleksey Morozov has been elected president of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Morozov was unanimously elected to the position by the board’s league of directors according to a press release from the KHL. He previously served as vice president for the development of junior hockey for the league.

A native of Moscow, Morozov was a first-round pick by the Penguins in 1995 and spent his entire seven-year NHL career with the Penguins in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 451 career games with the Penguins, Morozov, no 42, had 219 points (84 goals, 135 assists).

During his time with the Penguins, Morozov developed something of a reputation as being a nemesis for the defensively stingy New Jersey Devils and goaltender Martin Brodeur.

Morozov had a far more prolific career in the KHL, primarily with Ak Bars Kazan, the team he joined after leaving the Penguins in 2004. In 294 career KHL games, Morozov had 287 career points (125 goals, 162 assists). Selected as Russia’s flag-bearer for the 2010 Olympics, Morozov retired from playing in 2014.
