Former Penguins forward Adam Johnson has signed with the Malmo Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), the top league in that country.
A native of Hibbing, Minn., Johnson, 26, spent the past three seasons in the Penguins organization after signing an entry-level contract as an undrafted free agent in July of 2017.
Last season, while working on a one-year, two-way contract, Johnson appeared in seven NHL games with the Penguins and scored two points (one goal, one assists).
Additionally, he played in 48 American Hockey League (AHL) games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton during the 2019-20 campaign and led that team in scoring with 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists).
Johnson was one of the few remaining players who finished the 2019-20 season under an NHL contract with the Penguins still looking for work this offseason. Forwards Thomas Di Pauli, Kevin Roy and Conor Sheary remain unrestricted free agents.
