Over the years, Sidney Crosby has looked to his right and viewed a rotating crew ranging from sublime talents such as Marian Hossa to sage veterans like Bill Guerin to sturdy contributors such as Pascal Dupuis to subpar entities akin to Steve Downie.
Then there is Dominik Simon.
One of Crosby’s most frequent right wingers over the past two seasons was given another chance on the top line at the start of Saturday’s game against the Blue Jackets at PPG Paints Arena.
Simon, an AHL All-Star, has been an enigma throughout his NHL career. He has gotten regular shifts with Crosby but has scored 12 goals in 110 NHL games. Yet he regularly drives plenty of advanced possession metrics such as the 61.44 Corsi For percentage he boasted last season.
Which matters the most?
“Points, definitely,” Simon said. “It’s the first line, so you’re supposed to score goals on that line. Definitely scoring goals is key.”
Given his experience playing with Crosby and Guentzel, Simon has a grasp of the methods expected with that duo.
“Playing quick,” said Simon. “Playing right on them. Some give-and-goes and finding some good spots and supporting each other. Getting shots and getting to the net.”
Said coach Mike Sullivan on Simon: “He’s a good player. He’s hard on pucks. He makes plays. He’s just a good, solid 200-foot player.”
Simon appreciates Sullivan giving him another chance.
“Obviously, big,” he said. “You always want to play on the top line. It’s a big chance, for sure.”
