The Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ season came to end Saturday on the eve of their USL Championship playoff game at Birmingham Legion FC.

A cluster of positive covid-19 cases within the team forced the Riverhounds to cancel their trip to Alabama for Sunday’s Eastern Conference quarterfinal game. Birmingham Legion FC is awarded a victory and advances to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Riverhounds officials said there was no way for the team to safely travel and field a competitive team. The players who tested positive are in quarantine, according to the team.

“I’m gutted right now for Bob Lilley, his staff and our players to have the season end like this after all their hard work,” Riverhounds owner Tuffy Shallenberger said in a statement. “I’m also disappointed for our fans, who have been behind us all season. I hate to see our season end this way, but we’re going to come back even stronger next season.”

The Riverhounds finished the 2021 season 17-8-7 and in third place in Group D of the USL Championship Eastern Conference.
