It looks like sports will return methodically this summer, and that will include the restart of a longtime tradition in Cambria County.
What would summer in Johnstown be without baseball?
The Johnstown Collegiate Baseball League is set to begin June 17, according to the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat.
League commissioner Don Stanton made an announcement Monday about opening day, which initially was set for June 2. With Cambria County set to move to the “green phase” of Gov. Tom Wolf’s color-tiered plan to ease covid-19 restrictions on Friday, a firmer start date is in place.
The regular season will be 28 games and the playoffs will conclude in early August.
Five teams will play: Martella’s Pharmacy, Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors, Laurel Auto Group, Smith Transport and “O”.
There will be a doubleheader at Sargent’s Stadium at the Point and a single game at Roxbury Park to begin play.
The longstanding AAABA Tournament in Johnstown was wiped out in April by the virus. The 76th tournament will be played in 2021.
As for covid-19 guidelines, Stanton said the number of spectators will be limited and players will have to wear masks in the dugouts.
