Canada advanced to the semifinals of the IIHF World Championships on Thursday on a buzzer-beating goal by New Jersey Devils defenseman Damon Severson.
Trailing 2-1 to Switzerland with Penguins goalie Matt Murray pulled, Severson scored on a deflected point shot that slid over the goal line with 0.4 seconds left in regulation. Mark Stone scored about five minutes into the 10-minute, three-on-three overtime period.
Murray made 22 saves, including four in overtime, to lead Canada to the 3-2 victory.

In another quarterfinal, Evgeni Malkin set up the game-winning goal to lead Russia past the United States, 4-3. Malkin made a cross-ice, backhand pass to set up a Mikhail Grigorenko and give Russia a 4-2 lead in the third period.
Dominik Simon recorded an assist as the Czech Republic scored a 5-1 victory over Germany to reach the semifinals.
Patric Hornqvist and Marcus Pettersson bowed out when Sweden dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Finland. Hornqvist scored his seventh goal in eight games in the tournament in the loss.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Canada will meet the Czech Republic and Russia will face Finland.
