After no live sports for months, all of a sudden Pittsburgh sports fans must choose between watching two local teams at the same time. The region’s cable sports network is going to handle coverage of both.

A new alternate channel, PIT2, will provide coverage of two Pittsburgh Pirates games next week. The Monday and Wednesday games against the Minnesota Twins begin at the same time as Pittsburgh Penguins playoff games against the Montreal Canadiens.

AT&T SportsNet is the rightsholder for both teams. While conflicts during the first round of the playoffs typically occur on an annual basis, this year’s are in July rather than April as both MLB and the NHL had seasons put on pause because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the past, a Pirates game might have been bumped to another network or not broadcast locally at all.

The Penguins qualifying round Games 2 and 3 are Monday and Wednesday, respectively.

Both channels will offer the usual pre- and postgame shows.

Where to find PIT2 will depend on your TV provider. AT&T SportsNet provided a list of cable and satellite providers it serves. Some of the more common providers’ channel numbers:” Comcast, 262; DirecTV, 659-1; Verizon Fios, 81/581/1528; Armstrong, 300 (HD), 10 or 20 (SD).

The Penguins open their playoff series with Game 1 on Saturday. The Pirates play a three-game weekend series in Chicago before heading to Minnesota.

Keep up with the Pittsburgh Penguins all season long.
