Alle-Kiski Valley Campus Clippings: Thimons named all-region

Highlands graduate Brayden Thimons was a defensive force again this past fall for the Westminster football team.

The Titans graduate student defensive end, a two-time Presidents Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, recently was selected to the D3football.com All-Region 2 team.

A three-time first-team All-PAC selection, he ranked third in the league with 16 tackles for a loss and fourth in sacks with 8 1/2.

The 16 tackles for a loss ranks 31st in Division III.

Thimons finished the 2022 season with 59 tackles (42 solo). He also got to carry the ball several times, scoring three rushing touchdowns.

In 25 career games, Thimons totaled 47 tackles for a loss and 25 sacks.

Thimons was a D3football.com All-American (fourth team) pick last year as well as an Associated Press Division III All-American (second team) selection.

Grove City: Scott Fraser (Knoch) earned first-team Division III All-Region 2 honors at wide receiver. The junior first-team All-PAC selection led the conference with 70 receptions for 1,145 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022. Fraser recorded five 100-yard games, and he is the third Grove City player to gain more than 1,000 receiving yards in one season. He collected a career-best 209 receiving yards on 10 catches Sept. 17 at Carnegie Mellon. Fraser is fourth in program history with 1,958 career receiving yards. His 132 career catches rank fifth all-time.

Women’s basketball

Wooster: Junior guard Harley Holloway (Freeport) was second on the Fighting Scots team in scoring at 12.3 points per game through six games played. She tallied a season-best 22 points and connected on four 3-pointers in a 59-50 victory over Hilbert on Nov. 19. Holloway scored at least 13 points four times. She also averaged 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists. She was an All-North Coast Athletic Conference honorable mention pick last season after leading the team at 12.9 points a game through 26 games (24 starts).

Oakland: Sophomore guard Kennedie Montue scored a career-high 21 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists in a season-opening victory over Akron on Nov. 7. She added 12-point games against both Central Michigan and Illinois. Montue averaged 8.6 points through the Grizzlies’ first eight games (five starts).

Grove City: Freshman guard Reese Hasley (Deer Lakes) averaged 3.6 points for the Wolverines in a reserve role through seven games. She tallied a season-best eight points in 17 minutes in a victory against PAC foe Geneva on Nov. 19. She added seven points in a 69-61 win for Grove City (4-4, 4-1) at conference rival Westminster on Dec. 3.

Men’s basketball

Allegheny: Freshman Ryan Lang (Knoch) led the Gators with averages of 22.5 points and seven rebounds in a pair of PAC games. He scored 16 in a losing effort against Geneva before tallying a career-high 29 points in a victory over Thiel on Dec. 3. He was fourth on the team in scoring average (13.9) through 10 games (seven starts).

Wrestling

Bucknell: Junior Nick Delp (Kiski Area) and senior Darren Miller (Kiski Area) each won multiple matches at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 2-3. At 157 pounds, Delp went 3-2, including a 1-1 mark in the championship bracket. He scored a major decision and a regular decision in the first two consolation rounds before being eliminated. Miller (141) also went 1-1 in the championship bracket but bounced back to blank Northwestern’s Joel VanderVere, 7-0, in the consolation round of 16. He suffered a close 6-4 loss in the consolation round of eight.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Brayden Roscosky (Kiski Area) won seven of his first nine matches at 184 pounds with two pins, one major decision, one technical fall and three decisions. He stands at 26-5 for his career. He went 3-0 to claim first at the W&J Invitational with a pin in the quarterfinals, a major decision in the semifinals and a 3-2 win over Thiel’s Bryce McCloskey (Reynolds) in the finals.

Women’s swimming

Cal (Pa): Sophomore Madison Moretti (Freeport) placed eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18 minutes, 5.96 seconds) at the TYR Invitational, hosted by Liberty, the weekend of Nov. 19. She also was a part of the 400 free relay which took eighth (3:40.33) and the 800 free relay in ninth (8:15.03). Moretti set a personal record in the 500 free (5:16.31) for 17th overall. She reached the PSAC-qualifying standard in the 100 butterfly (1:01.01) and took 15th in the 200 free (1:58.50).
