The American Hockey League (AHL) announced Thursday it is aiming to open its 2020-21 season by Dec. 4.

Like most sports leagues around the world, the AHL halted play in mid-March because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The remainder of the 2019-20 season was formally canceled May 11.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins played their final game March 11 and finished with a 29-26-3-5 record, good enough for sixth place in the North Division.

Typically, the AHL opens its season in early October.

The NHL is aiming to open its 2020-21 season Dec. 1.
