Ben Roethlisberger readies to accept a shotgun snap during the Jan. 3, 2022 game against the Cleveland Browns. It was the final home game of Roethlisberger’s career, and also the 18th consecutive regular-season home victory for the Steelers against the Browns.

Heading into their matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night at Acrisure Stadium, how long had it been since the Cleveland Browns won a regular-season game in Pittsburgh?

Let’s put it this way: there wasn’t any trash-talking about it afterward from the Ohioans on Facebook. That social-media network had yet to be invented. And even if it had, the iPhone wasn’t around, for that matter.

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett was 5 years old, Ben Roethlisberger was a junior at Miami (Ohio), and Mike Tomlin was the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With the sizable caveat that the Browns did once win a playoff game at what was then called Heinz Field (in January 2021), the losing streak sat at 19 heading into Monday for Cleveland in Pittsburgh during the regular season.

A look back at each of those games:

Oct. 10, 2004

Ohio native Ben Roethlisberger’s first start against the team he grew up rooting for became the first of 26 career wins against them and first of 14 on the banks of the Ohio River. Then-22-year-old Big Ben had a touchdown rushing and passing in a 34-23 win.

Nov. 13, 2005

Roethlisberger was out with a knee injury, and backup Charlie Batch suffered a broken hand during the game. No. 3 QB Tommy Maddox entered, but it was wide receiver Antwaan Randle El’s 51-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward that accounted for the highlight score of a 34-21 win.

Dec. 7, 2006

The first of two Thursday night games among the streak, Willie Parker broke the Steelers’ single-game rushing record with 223 yards in a 27-7 win during a bitter cold night with wind chills below zero.

Nov. 11, 2007

The Steelers faced their biggest deficit of the streak, coming back from down 21-6 late in the second quarter for a 31-28 win. Though Josh Cribbs’ 100-yard kickoff return had restored Cleveland’s advantage, the winning score came on Roethlisberger’s 2-yard touchdown to Heath Miller with 3:13 left.

Dec. 28, 2008

The biggest story from this regular-season finale was that Roethlisberger was concussed after absorbing a second-quarter hit during what was a meaningless game for the playoff-bound Steelers, who won 31-0 and luckily had Big Ben back for the start of the playoffs.

Oct. 18, 2009

The Steelers extended an overall (home and away) winning streak against the Browns to 12 games with this 27-14 victory in which Ward had 159 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Oct. 17, 2010

Roethlisberger was cheered in his return from a four-game league suspension, throwing three touchdown passes in a 28-10 win early in a season during which the Steelers would advance to the Super Bowl.

Dec. 8, 2011

Roethlisberger shook off a high-ankle sprain that knocked him out of the middle portion of this Thursday night game. His 79-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown capped the scoring in a 14-3 win.

Dec. 30, 2012

The only game Tomlin has ever coached in which his team was eliminated from playoff contention, the Steelers forced four turnovers and won this season finale 24-10.

Dec. 29, 2013

Another regular-season finale, the Steelers for the second year in a row improved to 8-8 by beating Cleveland. Lawrence Timmons had an interception and a sack of the Browns’ Jason Campbell.

Sept. 7, 2014

The only season opener during the streak, the Steelers blew a 27-3 halftime lead but won it 30-27 on a Shaun Suisham 41-yard field goal as time expired.

Nov. 15, 2015

The only “relief” victory of Roethlisberger’s career, Big Ben came off the bench when Landry Jones suffered an ankle injury and led the Steelers to a 30-9 win. Roethlisberger had spent the week recovering from a sprained foot.

Jan. 1, 2017

With backups playing in the regular-season finale, the Steelers needed to rally from down two touchdowns and an overtime deficit to win 27-24 on a Jones 26-yard touchdown pass to Cobi Hamilton.

Dec. 31, 2017

Another regular-season finale in which the Steelers relied on Jones and other reserves, they put the final touches on the Cleveland indignity of an 0-16 season with a 28-24 win.

Oct. 28, 2018

James Conner had 212 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, and the Steelers also scored on a safety to win 33-18. It avenged a rare non-win (a tie) in Cleveland the month prior.

Dec. 1, 2019

The only other time (joining Monday) that the Steelers were an underdog during the streak, this 20-13 victory was perhaps most remembered for coming two weeks after Myles Garrett’s helmet swing on Mason Rudolph in Cleveland.

Oct. 18, 2020

Less than three months prior to the home playoff defeat to the Browns, the Steelers tied their biggest margin of victory during the home win streak against them. In front of a crowd of 5,260 during the covid-19 pandemic, the Steelers had two interceptions and four sacks of Baker Mayfield in a 38-7 win.

Jan. 3, 2022

In what will forever be most recalled for being Roethlisberger’s final home game, this was the only Steelers-Browns Monday night game at Acrisure Stadium before 2023. Roethlisberger went 24 for 46 for 123 yards and a touchdown, but Najee Harris’ 188 rushing yards paced the 26-14 win.

Jan. 8, 2023

For the sixth time during the streak, the contest was a regular-season finale. Though they would miss out on a playoff berth because the Dolphins were simultaneously beating the Jets in Miami, the Steelers got touchdowns from George Pickens, Najee Harris and Derek Watt during a 28-14 win.
