3 Pitt wrestlers earn titles at Michigan State Open

Three Pitt wrestlers claimed titles at the Michigan State Open.

The Panthers sent 12 wrestlers to compete in the freshman/sophomore division and open division.

Micky Phillippi (Derry), Cole Matthews and Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park) were champions, and redshirt freshmen Louis Newell (Seneca Valley) and Luke Kemerer (Hempfield) finished second.

Phillippi went 4-0 in the 133-pound weight class of the open division, and Bonaccorsi was 4-0 at 184.

Heavyweight Demetrius Thomas went 5-1 and finished third. Jake Wentzel (South Park) took third after going 3-3 at 165.

In the freshman/sophomore division, freshman Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional) placed fourth at 125, with his only loss to Newell.

Matthews went 4-0 in winning 141, and Kemerer was 3-1 in finishing second at 149. Hunter Hernan placed third at 165.

Pitt opens the dual season 2 p.m. Saturday against Campbell. The Panthers are ranked No. 14.
