3 local golfers advance to U.S. Open sectional
Qualifying for the U.S. Open in Los Angeles has begun with local qualifiers, and three golfers from the Pittsburgh Area have earned spots in the sectional qualifiers in late May and early June.
The United States Golf Association’s 123rd U.S. Open has numerous qualifiers going on. The Pittsburgh qualifier will be May 15 at The Club at Nevillewood, at which there are four spots available.
Local qualifying began April 17 and May 16. The U.S. Open will be played June 15-18 at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Will Wears, grandson of the late Arnold Palmer and a graduate of Latrobe, earned a spot while playing at the Country Club of York. Wears shot a 69 and was one of four to qualify.
Amateur John F. Aber of Sewickley earned a spot while playing at Scioto Reserve Country Club in Powell, Ohio. He shot a 70 and was one of six to advance.
He’s a junior at Wittenberg University. He was named North Coast Athletic Conference Dick Gordin award winner as the men’s player of the year, voted on by the coaches.
Aber’s teammate, Fox Chapel grad Matthew Mattioli, earned the 2023 NCAC men’s golf Bob Nye Award as the medalist of the championship tournament. He shot a 212.
Fox Chapel grad Amani D’Ambrosio was one of five to qualify from the Cape Club of Palm City, Fla. He shot a 65. D’Ambrosio is a junior at Barry University.
Obremski playing PGA LatinoAmerica Tour
Penn-Trafford grad Dan Obremski qualified for his second-consecutive PGA Tour LatinoAmerica event.
Obremski played in the Diners Club Peru Open in Lima, Peru.
Obremski played baseball in high school, but he had too many doubles and one triple during his two rounds, which aren’t good for golfers.
He shot a 77 in Round 1 and an 80 in Round 2 and finished 13 over par. He did have an eagle on No. 3.
On Monday, Obremski shot a 1-under-par 71 in a qualifier and earned a spot in this week’s KIA Open in Quito, Ecuador.
Obremski, who is teaching golf in Florida, decided to return to the tour.
