Eight Shaler Area High School students were honored at the Oct. 18 school board meeting for earning a perfect score on the state-mandated Civic Knowledge test.

Seniors Hannah Klaas, Sadie Wilkinson, Jacob Kunc, Julian Vizzoca, Alexi Gralewski, Hailey Richards, Lilliana Zimmerman and Ronald Molnar were recognized and presented with certificates of achievement. Three students, Molnar, Zimmerman and Wilkinson, were able to accept their papers in person.

“Per the Pennsylvania Department of Education, students who achieve a 100% on their Civic Knowledge assessment must be recognized and provided a certificate,” said Sean Aiken, district superintendent.

The test challenged the student’s knowledge of principles and documents of the government, rights and responsibilities of citizens, how government works and international relationships.

“I did like my civics class a lot, but I didn’t know if I would do well (on the test) or not,” Wilkinson said. “I thought maybe a little bit above average, but I didn’t think 100%.”

After being recognized, the students were able to share what they wanted to do in the future. Zimmerman said she would like to become a comic artist or an animator one day. Wilkinson said she hopes to become a pediatric doctor. Molnar is planning to major in biochemistry and attend medical school.
