Military recognition ceremony

Shaler Township will recognize current military and veterans during its Community Day on July 4. The ceremony will take place at Kiwanis Park at 8 p.m.

15th Annual Shaler Great Gardens Tour

Treat yourself to a walk through five spectacular local gardens packed with creative ideas, colorful blooms, ponds and paths. Join the Shaler Garden Club for the 15th annual Shaler Garden Club’s Great Gardens Tour on July 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds from the tour benefit the Shaler North Hills Library. Tickets for the tour can be purchased at the library, located at 1822 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA 15116, for $15 in advance of the tour, or $18 the day of the tour. Tickets are also available online at shalerlibrary.org. Each ticket includes hosted visits to the five beautiful gardens and a chance to win a prize basket. The event is held rain or shine. Flea market

Glenshaw Presbyterian Church will hold a flea market and craft sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. July 15. Vendors are wanted. Price is $25 per parking space. The event will take place rain or shine and will also include a bake sale and silent auction. For more information, call Iris at 814-720-2868.

Float with a Flick

Head to Crawford Pool at 8:30 June 30 to see “Sonic the Hedgehog.” A $1 per person donation will be accepted at the gate and will go toward Shaler’s backpack initiative. Pool noodles and water wings are permitted. No rafts, innertubes or other inflatables are allowed.

Music education program recognized

Shaler Area School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
