I think too many of us have forgotten we are citizens, not subjects. This year has emphasized that exponentially.
Too many state governors have forgotten their role as leaders, not rulers. While leadership has a responsibility to give us guidance, resources and precautions in dangerous situations, leaders still have the responsibility of doing so under the guidelines of our Constitution. They have taken an oath to do so.
We, as citizens, have the right and responsibility to demand our rights and to ignore mandates that subjugate or restrict those rights. That’s what citizens do. Subjects do as they’re told and have no recourse.
While we all have a responsibility to act responsibly for the safety of our fellow citizens, it is not the American way for government to mandate it.
We all need to start acting like citizens, not subjects.
