Letter to the editor: Society is unraveling

If you follow current events, I think it’s obvious to you that societal cohesion and cooperation are quickly unraveling. The thin veneer of civilization is peeling off like a bad paint job.

When I was in grade school we said the Pledge of Allegiance and prayed every day. Students respected teachers or faced needed discipline. School was a place of learning and growing. Why did that stop?

In high school I fired a gun inside the school. That’s because we had a rifle team and practiced in the basement with live ammunition. And nobody batted an eye. Students now get active shooter training because there’s a school shooting almost every other week. What changed between then and now?

Gambling, drugs and pornography used to be considered vices. Now they are accepted, promoted and taxed. From OnlyFans to your nearby marijuana dispensary, from the local casino to the internet, they are ubiquitous.

People seem unable to control their violent impulses and unruly behavior most everyplace: cruise ships, restaurants, shopping malls, flying, driving, concerts, sporting events. Why such primitive behavior in 2025?

We no longer accept God, the holy Bible, traditional family values and absolutes instead of moral relativism. The word “sin” seems to have been removed from our lexicon. We have no foundation to secure our culture. And we’re seeing the results.
