And so another act of political violence has taken a life; and a wife and two small children are left without a husband and father. That scenario alone, without delving into the whos, whats and whys, should be enough to make normal people feel somber and sad for our country and our culture. Much of the public commentary has expressed these feelings, including kind remarks from those who opposed Charlie Kirk’s political views.
However, some on the left just couldn’t help themselves. From TV commentators to politicians to keyboard warriors, too many felt the need to condemn Kirk for his opinions, citing his “hateful” rhetoric, even blaming him for his assassination. Deplorable.
Kirk was considered controversial by many on the left. But he was far from hateful. His debates with college students around the country demonstrate a willingness to engage with even those who vehemently opposed his politics. He wanted, more than anything, to share his faith and express how his faith supported his politics. He went onto college campuses, where he knew he would face pushback on his conservative stances. He never shouted down or berated someone who was willing to step to the microphone and engage in civil discourse.
Yes, many on the left disagreed with his views on race, abortion and LGBTQ issues. But he was authentically who he was, openly engaging anyone who was willing to debate, not allowing constant death threats to deter him. He loved free and open dialogue. Isn’t that something we should all want?
