Letter to the editor: Denying the horror show

What has been exposed over the past few years through corruption and crimes beyond the pale, all verifiable and undeniable, has shown that our nation has almost reached its moral and ethical nadir. And the fact that hardly anyone has been held accountable for anything shows that we may be beyond redemption.

It is evident that the rot and poison are now baked into the American apple pie, and even a double scoop of vanilla ice cream can’t make it palatable. But soon enough we won’t be able to afford dessert anyway. Bread and circuses will no longer be effective in pacifying the masses.

We deny the horror show unfolding around us and distract ourselves from it in the most desperate ways. Some tune in to watch morally bankrupt millionaires, modern court jesters, self-congratulating themselves with golden statues. Some invest precious time and energy worshipping grown men playing games, glorifying the fallen mortals of professional sports.

Others self-medicate to the point where the U.S. is the biggest consumer of illegal drugs in the world, and that’s not considering legally prescribed drugs and alcohol. And comforting ourselves with food has made our waistlines the only thing expanding quicker than economic inflation.

When we consider truth relative, accept that history and biology are in flux, trust corrupt media, government and science and refuse to enforce the rule of law, then things seem hopeless. But hope is not lost. For it is written that justice prevails and God wins in the end.
