It is outrageous that elected Westmoreland Republican elected officials are wasting precious government resources to investigate registered voters in Pennsylvania for allegedly voting in two different states when they have not even voted in 2024 yet (“Voting probe launched in Westmoreland County over 2020 fraud claims pitched by GOP lawmakers,” Oct. 18, TribLive).

Rep. Eric Nelson, R-Hempfield, who conceded there is no proof any of those people cast more than one ballot in 2020, should resign for calling for this bogus investigation to intimidate voters and suppress their constitutional right to vote.

As Westmoreland County Election Bureau Director Greg McCloskey said, the accuracy of the voting rolls is checked in-house using data from the state, and “If someone was registered in another state, we’d be notified.”

McCloskey said that since 2022 the election bureau has referred three names, based on information sent from other states, to the district attorney’s office for investigation of suspected voter fraud. No criminal charges have been filed.

Kudos to the Tribune-Review for assigning reporter Rich Cholodofsky to uncover this plot to undermine democracy and for pointing out that “no similar (double voting) cases have been prosecuted recently in Western Pennsylvania.”

I call on Westmoreland government officials to halt this absurd investigation.
