In 2025 the 50-year anniversaries of various momentous events of 1975 have been remembered. This is also the 50-year anniversary of high school graduation for those of us born in 1957, at the peak of the baby boom. In September I will gather with fellow graduates of the Greater Latrobe Senior High School Class of 1975 to celebrate our anniversary. At 610 graduates, we were among the largest graduating classes of GLSHS.
We of the Class of 1975 grew up during the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s. While the conflict and turbulence of the world swirled around us, we were fortunate to have our childhood protected and nurtured by our community. An ecosystem of many people collectively cared about, watched over, guided and provided opportunities for us.
The Latrobe area continues to be very supportive of its young people and of education. The community commitment to the Greater Latrobe School District is evident in renewal of facilities, support of diverse academic and extracurricular programs, public recognition of the initiative of teachers, and the achievements of students. It is also evident in the work of the Greater Latrobe Partners in Education Foundation.
Thank you to all those parents, teachers and community leaders who supported the Class of 1975 as we grew up. As a new school year begins, may our gratitude be a reminder that when the efforts of teachers are supplemented with the help of the entire “village,” a strong foundation for students that lasts a lifetime is the impactful result.
