Travelers leave nearly $1 million in TSA bins every year

Stressed passengers cruising through airport security checkpoints are abandoning nearly a million dollars in cash each year. And the Transportation Security Administration has been claiming finders keepers.
But now someone else wants that money. The Department of Homeland Security is looking to fund border security and they spotted that $3 million in loose change rattling around over at the TSA, reports NBC News.
How did they find out about the extra cash? The TSA reports it to Congress annually. And travelers are getting worse at packing their coins.
In 2012, NBC News reports the TSA found $531,000 and in 2016 it climbed to $867,812 and then $960,105 in 2018.
Passengers are not just getting nickel and dimed. Unclaimed wallets with large bills are included in the yearly haul, TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein told Vox.
Busy hubs like John F. Kennedy International Airport topped the revenue collectors in 2017 with $72,392, reports Vox. Passengers going through Reno, Nevada, left only $19.85 noted Vox.
