A man in Thomas County, Ga. got busted for drug possession after his neighbor’s dog found his stash of methamphetamine.

The dog had reportedly come home carrying a suspicious brown bag in its mouth, leading to a further investigation as to where the illegal contents may have come from.

WSB-TV news reports how the anonymous owner of the dog notified the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office that he discovered a large amount of the drugs (later confirmed to be nearly 155 grams of meth) as well as lottery tickets inside the bag his pooch had come home with.

These lottery tickets ended up being a prime clue in the case as narcotics and vice agents were able to trace the tickets via surveillance footage back to the exact location and time of their purchase.

The news station continues to report that officials were eventually led to 44-year-old Timothy Bernard Reese, who had been taken into custody after assaulting a woman. He later confessed that the bag that the dog had found was his.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse states in a January study how drug-involved overdose deaths rose between 2018 and 2019, an increase which includes the use of methamphetamine. The study additionally notes how the use of meth has notably spiked in the past decade, jumping from 547 fatal overdoses in 1999 to 16,167 in 2019.

Reese pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute the drugs. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, plus three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $1,000,000.
