‘The Sound Inside’

Barebones Black Box in Braddock presents “The Sound Inside.” The Tony-award winning show by playwright Adam Rapp is at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The story involves Bella Baird, an isolated creative writing professor at Yale, played by Pittsburgh’s own Elena Passarello. She begins to mentor a brilliant but enigmatic student named Christopher, played by Max Pavel. The two form an unexpectedly intense bond.

A limited-menu of food and drink options at Brew Gentlemen next door will be available from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a brunch/lunch option on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Block Party

JADED, the Pittsburgh-based Asian American & Pacific Islander artist collective, led by women and non-binary artists, will host Wildness, a daylong celebration of arts and culture in partnership with Rivers of Steel, which showcases the artistry and innovation of southwestern Pennsylvania’s industrial and cultural heritage.

The free event is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Pump House in Munhall. It will showcase artistic talent, local histories and celebrate kinship.

Festivities will kick off with a screening of “The Last Mayor of Chinatown,” a documentary that tells the story of Pittsburgh’s lost Chinatown through the memoir and archives of Yuen Yee, the last honorary mayor.

There will be a discussion with director Lena Chen and Shirley Yee, the daughter of Yuen Yee, as well as performances from Steel Dragon Martial Arts, Anisha Baid, Davine Byon, Bonnie Fan, Mango and Sara Tang. There will be cookie decorating and Asian calligraphy workshops as well as live music from disc jockey Samira Mendoza.

Barrel & Flow

Barrel & Flow Fest, a Black Arts & Craft Brew Festival, is happening from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The event brings 55 collaboration brews, 60 food and artisan vendors, 40 Black-owned breweries, 20 community organizations, seven bands, five deejays, and four art stages. It will be held at The Stacks at 3 Crossings in the Strip District.

There will be a tent featuring hands-on science, tech, engineering, arts and math activities supported by the Carnegie Science Center and Atithi Art Studios. The Pittsburgh Brewers Guild, Master Brew Association, and Three Rivers Alliance of Serious Homebrewers will provide brewing demonstrations.

Barrel & Flow was named the best beer festival in the USA Today’s Readers’ Choice 10 Best beer festival contest.

General admission tickets are $60, VIP tickets are $225.

Asian Lantern Festival

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium in Highland Park presents Asian Lantern Festival: World of Wonders, opening Friday. Hours are 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The theme, which includes new lanterns, honors the zoo’s 125th anniversary with a global passport. The display includes mountains, the jungle and sea designs. The festival will run until Oct. 29 on Thursday through Sunday nights.

Tickets start at $22 for adults, $19 for children ages 2-13. Children under 2 are free.

Hip-Hop

The City of Pittsburgh: 50 Years of Hip-Hop Celebration is from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday in Market Square, Downtown.

It’s hosted by Khari Mosley, political director for 1Hood Media, a nonprofit based in Pittsburgh that promotes arts, education and social justice with a focus on the region’s Black community. There will be performances by Driving While Black Records, Nairobi, Lynnwood and hip-hop pioneer Tuffy Tuff.

Disc jockey KoolBreeze will be spinning the hottest tracks. Slim the DJ and Arie Cole will be battling it out for hip-hop supremacy. The Get Down Gang will provide a breakdance exhibition.

Artists Shane Pilster and Wavy Wednesday will create live graffiti.
