Rillton woman turned passion for cooking, baking into profession

Alice Ogg loved to cook, bake and make candy — so much so she turned her passion into a profession. She operated her candy and catering business, Alice’s Candy, from her Rillton home in the 1970s and 80s.
“She made the candy during the holidays — Christmas and Easter. She loved to decorate the candy, painting the faces and hands on the candy,” said Tye Ogg of Girard, her daughter-in-law.
Mrs. Ogg sold some of her candy at the Golden Dawn grocery store that her sister, Roberta Steinhoff, owned in Albion.
She catered weddings, graduations and funeral wakes, according to her son, Jesse Ogg Jr. of Girard. Her three sons and one daughter provided “all the free labor” for her business, Jesse joked.
Alice M. Ogg of Rillton, formerly of Fairview, Erie County, died Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at her home. She was 75.
She was born Feb. 17, 1944, in Meadville, a daughter of the late John L. and Winifred Joslin Mischler.
Jesse Ogg said his paternal grandfather moved to the North Bessemer section of Penn Hills, which was where his mother met her husband, Jesse A. Ogg Sr.
After the couple married, they moved to the Rillton area, where Mr. Ogg’s family had a farm in Sewickley Township.
Mrs. Ogg operated the concessions stand at Crabapple Pool in Sewickley Township and was head cook at a nursing home in North Huntingdon.
Jesse said both of his parents worked hard — his father at the Westinghouse Air Brake Co. plant in Wilmerding and in coal mines, while his mother was cooking and baking.
“They were workaholics,” he said.
Mrs. Ogg was a member of the Herminie United Methodist Church and was very involved with church functions. She helped cook and bake for all the church bazaars and dinners, Jesse said.
In addition to her son Jesse Ogg, Mrs. Ogg also is survived by two other sons, Forrest Ogg of Rillton and John Ogg of West Newton; a daughter, Heather Keller; and 11 grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Joseph W. Nickels Funeral Home Inc., 404 Sewickley Ave., Herminie. Interment was held at Mars Hill Cemetery, Irwin.
