Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., left, with his wife Gisele Barreto Fetterman, arrive for Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro’s Inauguration, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023, at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa.

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman and his wife, Gisele Fetterman, were in a car crash on a Maryland interstate Sunday morning.

They were evaluated at a hospital “out of an abundance of caution” but avoided serious injury, Fetterman’s office said.

Fetterman, a Democrat from Braddock, was westbound on Interstate 70 shortly before 8 a.m. on Sunday, when he crashed into another vehicle near the interchange with Interstate 68 near Hancock, Md., according to Maryland State Police.

Fetterman was driving a Chevrolet Traverse, which hit the back of a Chevrolet Impala.

“For unknown reasons, the Traverse struck the rear of the Impala,” Maryland State Police said in a news release.

Both Fettermans visited a local hospital after the crash out of an abundance of caution, and John was treated for a bruised shoulder, said Fetterman’s office. Both were discharged that afternoon.

You might have heard G and I were in a car accident yesterday. Thank you all for the well wishes.

Not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary but we’re doing well and happy to be back home in Braddock with the family. pic.twitter.com/OKFmbUXtNF

The couple posted a video on the X social media platform Monday evening, thanking people for their support. John Fetterman held up a bag of frozen peas and a bottle of Tylenol that he’s using for his injuries.

“Thank you, for all of you, that you care,” he said.

Gisele Fetterman said, “It was the worst anniversary,” and John Fetterman said, “not great for our wedding anniversary, but we’re both great.” The couple wed in June 2008.

The driver of the Impala was taken by ambulance to a West Virginia hospital for unspecified injuries, according to state police.

“No citations were issued. The crash investigation remains active and ongoing,” Maryland State Police said.

John Fetterman suffered a stroke in May 2022 and was hospitalized for clinical depression, a common side effect of strokes, in early 2023.
