Low-income seniors looking for a state rebate on property taxes or rent have a little more time to apply.

The deadline has been extended to Dec. 31, state Rep. Joseph Petrarca, D-Westmoreland, said Wednesday. Previously, applicants had until the end of the June to apply.

Those eligible for a rebate are residents 65 years and older, widows and widowers 50 and older and adults with disabilities. Annual income eligibility limits are $35,000 for homeowners and $15,000 for renters.

Applicants must provide proof of taxes paid for the year claimed. To calculate income, exclude half of Social Security paid.

The maximum rebate is $650. The rebate is on property taxes or rent paid in 2018.

“This extension is good news for seniors and those who struggle to find ways to pay their property taxes,” Petrarca said in a statement

There is no cost to apply. Petrarca said his office can assist those applying for the program.

The property tax-rent rebate program is supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery. Seniors and disabled adults have received more than $6.9 billion in property tax and rent relief under the program since 1971.

Rebate checks for 2018 will not be mailed until after July 1.
